Hi Chuck, Nice piece that summarizes the changing market dynamics pretty well. But I'm less convinced that we are looking at a linear trend, but much more of a cycle. I can't speak for Sun, but HP is investing heavily in storage again and there is recent precedent to believe we (I work for HP now) can be very successful in storage. After all, who would have predicted thought that our networking products would have rebounded so well and would be gaining share so fast? But if EMC wants to believe we are fading away, that's fine with us.

Hi Marc

The nice thing about this post is that is was based on consistent and public data. By that measure, the facts are the facts, even if they're unpleasant.

I think you're arguing for the ever-famous "past results are no guarantee of future performance". I hope that HP's new round of investments pay off!

Excellent synopsis and summary of the IDC report, Chuck, thanks for running through the exercise for the benefit of those of us who didn't get a copy.

I have to agree somewhat with Marc's comments, however, with a small twist as to why. Your long look back is a good idea, but by definition it doesn't show recent trends. HP seems to have dropped the ball on storage for a number of years, but is clearly re-focused on it now. With the purchase of LeftHand a few years back, and now 3Par (which just missed being in the Garner 'Leaders' quadrant by itself in late 2010), I think HP is poised to gain in both market share and in revenue share. We'll be all be watching, of course, and it will take time.

The other player who a 9-year-long view of storage trends and marketshare may miss, or misrepresent somewhat, is IBM. Recent advances and product additions (storage acquisitions) such as XIV and Storwize will not show up well in a many years long trend analysis, but both lines show strong growth it terms of units sold. Whether those gains show up as a revenue boost, only time will tell.

Regarding Hitachi/HDS and its negative growth over your 9-year review, you may have missed their recent press release: "Hitachi recognizes that we have a marketing problem. Rest assured, we have our best engineers working on it". Amazing how a company that can do so much right can't sell their way out of a paper bag. Oh well.

Take Care, --bmr
