EMC announced a major update to the popular enVision security information and event management (SIEM) platform.
A few days back, members of the product team were in my office, and we were chatting about what made this announcement so cool. Update: one of them has even started a cool security blog: Token Security Guy.

Someone shared a copy of a recent Gartner report "2008 Data Center Conference Instant Polling Results: Virtualization Summary", dated March 2, 2009.
For those of you who are obsessed with methodologies, you won't like this one -- the sampling bias is rather significant, e.g. attendees at the Gartner conference who chose to answer this survey.
But, with that grain of salt, there are some interesting findings.

Four times a year, IDC releases their market share analysis for the storage market.
Even though most vendors don't talk much about it, just about every vendor subscribes to their service. Much time is spent in conference rooms debating and discussing the numbers and their implications: by segment, by protocol, by geography, etc. etc.
I usually try to find a bit of time to reflect on a few trends that others might find interesting, but that's no substitute.
And there were definitely a few thought nuggets with this round of analysis.

Today, I'm going to channel another VMware uber-geek at EMC, Chad Sakac, and explore the simple but powerful concept of barcodes as today's virtualized environments evolve into tomorrow's private clouds.
It's just a well-understood concept from one domain being applied to another.
