Chuck,

A survey size of 124 is pretty small. Secondly, this is supposedly a survey of global IT orgs. What's classified as a global org?

The conclusion around choosing a distinct platform and potentially different vendor for virtual environments is a valid one. I've also seen customers choosing a different storage topology for VMware over their non-virtual environments too.

I know this doesn't necessarily follow your - or EMC's - philosophy, but it's my experience that as organizations become smaller, the more likely they are to implement iSCSI over Fibre-Channel.

Large orgs like the ones in this survey are likely to stick with FC due to the investment that they've already made, the fact that they have storage admins trained in FC making the technical architecture decisions and thirdly, in larger shops, the x86 server environment is going to play second fiddle to the storage choice for the big iron (Unix, Mainframe, etc.).
There's also the scalablility factor too - few vendors can offer a cost effective iSCSI storage infrastructure over ~150TB. Netapp, Dell-Equallogic, Compellent and others will argue otherwise, of course.

Hi Geoff -- thanks for writing.

Agreed -- a sample size of 124 is hardly conclusive.

And I'm sure there's no consistency on defintion of terms like "global IT org", although I presume it means bigger shops rather than smaller ones.

However, all these survey are interesting food for thought. I don't take any of them as gospel, and neither should anyone else :-)

And -- surprise! -- EMC and I would agree with your observation that the smaller the shop, the more likely we'd see some sort of IP storage solution. We've got a nice business there, great market share, decent differentiation, strong channels, etc.

And -- for the final shocker -- I'd agree with you that there aren't too many options for "big iSCSI". A bit of trivia - the DMX was one of the first storage platforms in the industry to support native iSCSI.

Not much call for it though :-)

Thanks again!

-- Chuck
