Desperate Times In Storage Land?

It's been a busy week -- everyone wakes from their summer torpor, and we're off to the races.

A lot of interesting little things happened this week, nothing major, but I think there's a theme in here somewhere.

Let's see if I can connect the dots.

So, another press release from EMC that seem innocuous enough, but really doesn't get to the big ideas behind it.

And, unfortunately, it's going to look like I'm pandering again, because it's about EMC Avamar (which I write about all the time), and VMware (which everyone else is writing about now, in addition to me).

But, trust me, I think there's a really big idea here that you might find interesting ...

Information Governance Gets Serious ...

... or, more accurately, EMC gets serious about information management, and -- ultimately -- information governance.

Perhaps you saw this press release last week announcing the formation of EMC's Information Management consulting practice.

And, as always, there's more than meets the eye ...

Storage Scorecard

If you're a sports fan, you know how important the score is -- it's the first question anyone asks.

The storage industry is incredibly competitive.  That's good for everyone -- competition brings out the best in vendors, and customers win every time.

I wanted to take a moment and recap Gartner's recent storage industry scorecard analysis.  There's a new pecking order showing up, and -- if you're close to the storage industry -- you can see positions shifting around.

And that raises some interesting questions ...

I am very pleased to welcome Andrew Chapman to the EMC blogosphere.  As you'll see, he's very passionate about a number of newer topics in information management: compliance, records mgmt, and so on.  And to get the full Spitzer quote (which is great!), you'll have to see Andrew's blog ...

You know, at some point, the IT industry is going to have to get together and publicly acknowledge Mr. Sptizer for all of the IT spend he's created.  Don't know if that was his motivation, but -- if you think about it -- all of us in the vendor community can't ignore his cumulative effect.
